VEL SUBSEA
geiger counter
The Geiger counter is a tool that detects and measures beta, gamma and x-rays, and is a valuable tool if one deal with or potentially deals with hazardous materials, want to detect x-ray leaks or find radioactive rocks and/or minerals.
We have different versions of our Geiger Counter from handheld units to ROV tools that can be used down to 6000 meters below sea level.

A valuable ROV tool
Our Subsea Geiger counter is designed for subsea applications and can be integrated with any ROV or AUV down to 6000 MSW. We also have a handheld unit for divers.
The sensor has also been adapted for use on multirotor drones, aiding in the search for lost isotopes and nuclear submarines.
It detects and measures gamma and X-rays, making it a valuable tool for handling or monitoring hazardous materials. The unit can identify X-ray leaks and locate radioactive rocks and minerals.
Additionally, the Geiger counter is useful for emergency preparedness, nuclear incidents, accidents, and first-response situations. It is frequently employed to detect LRA scale in subsea risers.
Communication & Accuracy
Our ROV units come with software that allows you to access and read logs on your own Windows laptop or computer. The Geiger counter is supplied with a 24V cable and RS232/RS485 interface for reliable connectivity.
The Geiger counter offers reliable detection of beta, gamma, and X-rays with an energy sensitivity starting from 35 keV. It features a gamma sensitivity of 450 CPM per mR/hr and is calibrated to Cesium-137 (Cs-137) to ensure consistent and accurate measurements.
The unit provides a typical accuracy of ±10%, with a maximum deviation of ±15%, delivering dependable performance across a range of operating conditions.

Our handheld unit
Our VEL Subsea Geiger counter 50 is designed for subsea use and can be operated by divers at depths of up to 50 meters below sea level (MBSL).
It detects and measures gamma radiation and X-rays, making it a valuable tool when working with or around potentially hazardous materials. It can also detect X-ray leaks and help locate radioactive rocks and minerals.
For divers, it is especially useful during wreck inspections, environmental monitoring, decommissioning work, harbor security checks, and geological surveys, allowing for real-time safety assessments underwater.
Some Projects Completed
Norwegian Sea
Measured radioactivity levels on the wreck of the Russian submarine Komsomolets at 1800 MSW in the Norwegian Sea.
Mauritania
Conducted radioactivity assessments in the “Banda and Chinguetti Field” at 900 MSW off the coast of Mauritania.
Cyprus
Used our handheld unit to measure radioactivity from a ferry near Cyprus.
Cape Verde
Performed radioactivity examinations offshore near Cape Verde.
